New classes starting soon!

After so much success in the Spring/Summer 2020 cohort, HabitNu is delighted to announce that the program has been extended into the new year, and new classes will begin in December of 2020.

HabitNu’s Mississippi Diabetes Prevention Program is a CDC-accredited online wellness program, which is free to Mississippi residents with diabetes and prediabetes. Over 12 months participants attend online classes (once a week for the first-six months and then once a month for the remaining six months) with other members of their community and learn how to prevent diabetes in their own lives, cooking methods, and weight management techniques. It’s COVID-19 safe, and connects participants through video meetings and check-ins with real coaches. Participants also receive a biweekly produce delivery from Novo Nordisk’s FarmHouse to YourHouse program, and a free wifi “smart scale”.

MSDPP has real results

Mississippi ranks second in the nation for overall diabetes prevalence and the only state located in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) “Diabetes Belt” with every county showing increased diabetes prevalence. Nearly 308,000 individuals, or 13.6% of the state’s adult population live with diabetes and another 810,000 individuals or 37.5 % of the population have prediabetes. Diabetes and prediabetes cost Mississippi an estimated $3.5B each year, which comes out to around $3,000 per patient. That means that every person who uses HabitNu’s Diabetes Prevention Program to reduce their risk of diabetes could save the state thousands of tax dollars every year.

According to the CDC, if someone at risk for diabetes loses 5% of their body weight, the risk of developing type-2 diabetes is cut almost in half. In the April 2020 program, 44% of the HabitNu participants experienced weight loss between 4-12% with an average weight loss of 4.6% of their body weight within 16-weeks of joining the program, and it didn’t cost them a dime.

What’s next? Let’s get to 1,000 Mississippieans!

HabitNu needs help finding participants for a Diabetes Prevention Program that starts around the first week of December. The fresh produce is there, the health coaches are there, the medical science is there-- The last piece of this puzzle is community members like you. If you’re concerned about diabetes, have trouble finding and eating healthy foods, and want to make a change, sign up today through the portal on msdpp.org.

Let’s make Mississippi healthier together.
